The World Cup is the most watched sporting event in the world. People love the atmosphere, the competition, and the time with family. But nobody talks about the bad side of “the beautiful game,” where people work like slaves.
FIFA announced in December 2010 that the World Cup 2022 will take place in Qatar. From that point, stadium workers have been forced to work in inhumane conditions.
Workers get only 2.40€ per hour. They must work 12/14-hour days, far above the 8-hour workday in Germany. And, it’s not safe!

According to the Guardian newspaper, 6,500 workers have died during construction of the stadium.
Three years ago, German politician Norbert Blüm secretly watched how the employees from the stadium construction in Lusail City, Qatar, live. He noted that the workers have to work in bad conditions, with unhygienic rooms that bring diseases.
Human and worker rights abuses may not be allowed to subsidize German entertainment.
The workers are also not allowed to travel, for the very reason that most of them are trying to flee. That‘s why their passports are taken away. It's the employer‘s job, to collect the passports and hide them, until the workers are done with the stadium's construction.
Germany and Norway have called for protest, kneeling for human rights, right before the game starts. This is a nice gesture, but in the end, nobody protested. And they are still wearing the Qatar logo on the right side of their shirt. So, they’re advertising for a country that abuses worker rights and human rights.
Human rights are also violated by Qatar’s homosexuality ban. Same-sex relations could result in a person getting stoned.
One anonymous stadium construction worker said he is working hard to help his family survive. But human and worker rights abuses may not be allowed to subsidize German entertainment.
